Okay. So I haven’t exactly been writing in that I have not. At all. Since March. It is now June.

A lot has happened since but I’ll get on with current events: Polaris.

Last week the Polaris Music Prize (PMP) announced its long list. But before I get to the nominees, let me tell you about the Polaris Prize.

In 2006, Steve Jordan, a former A&R Executive with Warner Music Canada and True North Records founded the PMP and is currently Polaris’ Executive Director.

On its website, it states is Mission Statement as

The operation of a not-for-profit organization that annually honours, celebrates and rewards creativity and diversity in Canadian recorded music by recognizing, then marketing the albums of the highest artistic integrity, without regard to musical genre, professional affiliation, or sales history, as judged by a panel of selected critics and experts.

Oh, and it also wins you $20,000. Not bad, eh?

In comparison to the Juno’s or as I like to call them ‘The Nicklebacks’ (they have 12, and have also won a group of the year Juno consecutively since 2001…), which uses sales in many categories as a basis of award, the PMP is a godsend for the Canadian music scene.

Past winners include: Final Fantasy, He Poos Clouds (2006); Patrick Watson, Close to Paradise (2007); and Caribou, Andorra (2008).

For the most part, each year’s list has a great variety of music from all different genres and, not to mention, in both official languages.
